JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women’s volleyball wins second victory over Jacksonville University this season.
On Friday November 8, 2019, the University of North Florida women’s volleyball team faced off with the Jacksonville University women’s volleyball team for the second time this season in the UNF arena. With the Ospreys having the first win the stadium was tense with excitement as the crowd watched to see if UNF would have a double win or have to share the victory.

UNF scored the first point of the first set, but then committed a net violation giving JU a point. During the first set UNF continues to take the lead with 12 points over 11 halfway though. The set finishes 25 points to UNF and 16 points to JU.

JU brings the heat during the second set taking advantage of UNF’s exhaustion scoring most of the points. After UNF takes a timeout to boots moral, JU defeats the Ospreys during the second set with 25 points against 20 points.

During the third set UNF obliterated the Dolphins and scored with their highest margin all season with 25 points over JU’s 8 points. Rocio Moro, Solimar Cestero, and Julianna Askew were UNF’s biggest assist in this set’s victory.

The fourth set begins with JU in the lead for a majority of the game up to scoring 12 points against UNF’s 10 points. UNF players Emma Dixon and Bria Plante tied the game and pushed UNF into the lead 15/14 points. Taryn Griffey was thought to have won the game after a point scored at match point, but the point was reversed. The Ospreys still scored the last point to victory and took home the win for the night.

University of North Florida student, Scottie Couchot, said he was attending his first UNF volleyball game even though he loves the sport for its competitiveness.
“I think that UNF dominated the net, overcame injuries and some early penalties to take the match, this determination and clear mind will only help them the rest of the season,” said Couchot.
Osprey player number 7, Solimar Cestero, said the best part of the game was all the fun each player had while supporting each other and the energy.

“I expect the rest of the season to well, we are fighting for that spot on the [ASUN conference] tournament and right now that’s our main focus and goal,” said Cestero in regards to the rest of this year’s season.

Rocio Moro, UNF number 4 and senior player, mentioned that her favorite part of the night was how unified the team was and that they had fun together.

“For the rest of the season I expect a lot of improvement and growth for the team because in general it’s a young team. I’m really looking forward to see how we play in the conference tournament but overall, I just want to see my teammates and I improve our ranks individually and as a team,” said Moro about the rest of the season.
Former volleyball player, Paige Pridgeon, was inducted into the North Florida Hall of Fame.
